Happiness can be learned. For example, by taking time out each day to reflect on the positive aspects of your everyday life. Because if you have something good in your life but don't appreciate it, it's like not having it at all.
Learned optimism.
Everyday you have to commit yourself to doing things that will make you happy. One way of doing so is by finding the right goals and pursuing them. Or by concentrating of one thing. A single minded focus that demands all your attention (like painting or working out) so that you don't have time to think about the negative and, indirectly, train yourself to be positive.

In a recent study, it appears that what gives us personal satisfaction is what makes us happy and what gives us personal satisfaction is: independence, relatedness, self-esteem and competence.

am I happy, she asked herself

Laughter helps us be happy. Experts say laughter lowers stress hormones and boosts the immune system..... Each time you laugh, you increase the number and activity of your immune system cells....Ten minutes to an hour of laughing reduces the stress hormone cortisol.

The other evening I wanted to lower my cortisol level and suggested to Pierluigi that we go see a movie that would makes us laugh. HEARTBREAKERS was playing at a cinema nearby. The trailer had been entertaining so we decided to go see it. I can't remember the last time I wanted to get up and walk out in the middle of a film.
HEARTBREAKERS is a tale of a mother-daughter con team who earn their living by getting rich men to marry them so then they can rip them off. (As if men today weren't already terrorized enough by women!). The mother gets a guy to fall in love with her, marries him and then has the daughter seduce the husband so that the mother can ask for a divorce and get lots of money. There's nothing funny about playing with someone's emotions. And, as a mother, I found the whole idea incestuous. I saw the movie in Italian and maybe something got Lost In The Translation. But, with Sigourney Weaver and Gene Hackman in this film, I really expected something better. I got the impression from the film that alot of people find "being funny" synonymous with Bad Taste.
The only humor I got from this film came out in the form of bile.
