the aesthetics of aesthetics
Since Chiara has gotten back from Aix-in-Province, she’s gotten so many letters from her ex-classmates especially those from Japan. The other day she was reading some of the latter in front of me and I was amazed at the care that had been taken in composing them. They were miniature works of art. It surprised me as I’ve often thought the present day Japanese to be somewhat kitsch in their tastes--the belief coming from anime and the long queues of Japanese in front of Prada on Via Condotti. But the aesthetics of Chiara's letters shouldn’t have surprised me. In my research for ikastikos , I’ve often come across various Japanese philosophies relating to Daily Aesthetics--ikebana, wabi sabi, tea cerimonies, haiku, Sumi-e painting, notan, calligraphy, rock gardens, etc. Maybe it was the transition from those beautiful woodcuts to anime that had me disoriented (although there are similarities because the black out line of cartoon drawings is really just an extention of the black contours of a woodcut).
And I’ve noticed that there are a number of weblogs that have, in some way, A Japanese Connection. These are the ones I read on a regular basis: Synthetic Zero, GmtPlus9, Consumptive and Geisha Asobi.
